Definition of Myofascial Release

Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on manual therapy that applies sustained pressure and gentle stretching to the body’s fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves and organs. The technique is designed to reduce restrictions within the fascial system, improve tissue mobility, relieve pain and restore movement. Myofascial release may be performed by a trained therapist using their hands or elbows, or through self-myofascial release techniques using tools such as foam rollers, massage balls or other devices. Proposed effects include improved tissue mobility, changes in pain perception, increased circulation and modulation of the nervous system..

      A 2024 systematic review from Brazil’s Santa Catarina State University explored how myofascial release influences biomechanics relevant to sports performance, including flexibility, force production, movement efficiency and range of motion.       A 2025 review from Tehran University evaluated whether adding myofascial release to conventional rehabilitation improves outcomes for people with knee osteoarthritis.       An important 2026 review from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil addresses a fundamental question: does myofascial release physically alter fascial tissue? After analyzing randomized controlled trials, the authors concluded that there is currently very low-certainty evidence that manual or instrument-assisted myofascial release produces measurable changes in tissue stiffness. This does not necessarily mean that myofascial release is ineffective—rather, it suggests that any observed clinical benefits may arise through other mechanisms, such as changes in nervous system activity, pain modulation or movement patterns.
