Breathing Habits and Carbon Dioxide

July 15, 2026, 10AM-11AM ET | Free Webinar Hosted by GWI Breathe Initiative

Description:

Statistics suggest that tens of millions of people worldwide suffer with the profound and misunderstood symptoms and deficits of breathing habits that compromise respiration. This compromise is primarily the result of behavioral hypocapnia, a carbon dioxide (CO2) deficit brought about by vicious circle breathing habits. Survey data points to its accounting for as much as 60% of ambulance runs in the major USA cities and 25% of the USA population.  Unfortunately, these habits are rarely identified by practitioners, their effects mistakenly attributed to other causes, and their resolutions prescriptive in nature where focus is on symptoms rather than on causes. Carbon dioxide self-regulation is fundamental to health and performance.

Host Sandy Abrams will lead a conversation with panelists Peter M. Litchfield, PhD, and Sandra Reamer, MS, MFA. Learn more about our panelists below.

Panelists:

Peter M. Litchfield, Ph.D. is currently the President of the Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences and CEO for Better Physiology Ltd (manufacturer of CapnoGO). His expertise is behavioral physiology, a psychological perspective of how physiology regulates itself, and its practical relevance to breathing science, that is, respiratory psychophysiology. Peter and his partner, Sandra Reamer, established and pioneered the field of breathing behavior analysis, an emerging new field of study and practical application. He has numerous publications in breathing science, most recently two book chapters, both Breathing and respiration: a behavioral perspective, in an upcoming book on airway medicine to be published by Elsevier (2026). He has lectured extensively for more than 40 years in person and by webinar on breathing science related topics throughout North America and in Asia, Australia, Europe, and Latin America to diverse audiences, ranging from medical schools to corporate groups. Peter is a Member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Psychophysiological Research.

Sandra Reamer, MS, MFA is currently Director of Education for the Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences; Executive Director of CapnoLearning.org, a breathing analysis practitioner network which provides breathing services for clients with dysfunctional breathing habits that compromise health and performance; and a member of the Board of Directors for Breathing Science, Inc, a nonprofit 501(3)(c) corporation that hosts breathing science podcasts for general audiences. She and Peter are widely recognized as having pioneered and established the emerging new field, breathing behavior analysis. Together they coauthored a book about breathing habits and carbon dioxide regulation, CapnoLearning: An Introductory Guide (2022), a curriculum now offered worldwide to professionals interested in learning breathing behavior analysis for helping people edit and learn breathing habits that optimize respiration. Based on their work, she provides Internet consultation services worldwide for both practitioners and their clients.
