A major new study (1,600 participants) from the University of California Berkeley un-riddles why disrupted nightly sleep and clogged arteries are pathologically intertwined. It’s the first study to show that fragmented sleep is associated with a unique pathway—chronic circulating inflammation throughout the bloodstream—which, in turn, is linked to higher amounts of plaques in coronary arteries that can result in fatal heart disease.
