Gallup undertakes the only representative sampling of the world’s workforce (surveying 160,000 a year). Their latest study has good and bad news: Employees are now more engaged at work but also feel much more stress.

Engagement findings: The percentage of engaged employees globally rose from 2021 to 2022. Starting as low as 12%, the percentage of engaged employees has risen to 23%. That’s a disturbingly low figure, but the 11-point gain represents an increase of more than 250 million engaged employees. Engagement declined in the US and Canada, rose in South Asia, with Europe having the lowest engagement levels. Fifty-nine percent of employees are quiet quitting (not engaged); 18% are loud quitting (actively disengaged). More than half (51%) of global employees are actively looking for another job.

Stress findings: Worldwide, 44% of employees said they experienced a lot of stress the previous day—the second year in a row worker stress reached record levels. While the US and Canada are among the world’s most engaged workers, 52% reported high stress the day before. In contrast, only 13% of Europeans are engaged but reported stress is lower, at 39%. Stress is also high in East Asia (52%), a region with low employee engagement (17%). Stress is higher in younger workers and exclusively remote and hybrid workers.
